Gold Oxidation Catalyst; NanAucat™

Premier Chemicals’ gold oxidation catalyst NanAucat™ is a nano-particulate gold oxidation catalyst manufactured by 3M. It is available on Granular activated carbon/Titanuium Dioxide support in the form of extrudates.

Until recently, gold was thought to have few useful chemical properties due to it’s inert nature, however, scientists discovered in the late 1990’s that when clusters of gold are formed into particles in the 1-10nm size range, gold exhibits extremely high catalytic activity.

Premier Chemicals is one of the few companies globally which is able to offer commercial quantities of nano-particulate gold catalyst.
In recent years, there has been significant research into the catalytic properties and the potential commercial applications of nano-particulate gold . One of the main commercial uses identified was conversion of carbon monoxide to carbon dioxide, in particular at ambient temperatures.

Compared with other precious metal catalysts currently available, Gold Catalysts have demonstrated significantly higher catalytic activity, with lower precious metal content, thereby making them more cost-effective than traditional Platinum based catalysts. In addition, Gold based catalysts are less susceptible to deactivation by moisture, unlike traditional Hopcalite, Pt or Pt/Pd based oxidation catalysts. This makes Gold catalysts the catalyst of choice for CO removal in humid applications such as treatment of breathable air.

Gold based catalysts can typically be used in any application which currently uses more expensive Pt based oxidation catalysts, aswell as applications which were previously thought difficult due to high humidity.

In addition to removal of harmful contaminants such as carbon monoxide or VOC’s from gas streams, academic research supports that nano-particulate gold can be used as a catalyst in a wide range of chemical and industrial processes, including, but not limited to:-
  • Vinyl Acetate Monomer (VAM) production
  • Methyl Glycolate Production
  • Automotive Exhaust purification
  • Hydrochlorination of Ethyne
  • Decomposition of Dioxins
  • Oxidative Mercury Removal
  • Selective Hydrogenation
Premier Chemicals offers Gold catalyst available to purchase in quantities as low 100g for evaluation purposes. For commercial applications typically packaging is in 1kg units.
